05.31.2011: Godzilla 1985 Daikaiju Discussion

Godzilla 1985 Daikaiju Discussioneers

Martin, Cindy, Kyle, T'Igor, Heather & Justin take a trip way back to the glorious mid-eighties of Japan and spend a lot of time talking about Godzilla 1985.

I think I need to give myself a little more time to produce these Daikaiju Discussions! This is barely going to make it into the month of May, but I promised it would and here it is… episode 34 of the Kaijucast and this month we are talking all about the first Godzilla movie I ever saw, Godzilla 1985. In doing research on the film, I kind of decided to stop calling it “Godzilla Returns” because that’s more of a fan title I think. Actually I don’t know what else to call it since the actual title in Japan was just “Godzilla” (kind of makes things difficult on the fandom, Toho…).

Anyway, we sat down for a Kaijucast first for this screening by watching the Japanese film and immediately following that with the American version (big thanks to Chris who sent me a DVD made from his VHS tape!). While it was a great idea from the brains of Cindy & Martin and an interesting experiment, I think it was too long before we recorded. So we had a lot to talk about in this episode. If that wasn’t enough, there seemed to be a lot more Godzilla related news this month and I also played some requests, which are detailed below:

MONSTER MUSIC FOR MAY

1. Main Title by Akira Ifukube from Daikaiju Varan (1958)
2. Raging Mad Godzilla by Ko Otani from Godzilla·Mothra·King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack (2001)
3. Godzilla March by Akira Ifukube from Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972)
4. Godzilla’s Farewell by Reijiro Koroku from Godzilla Returns/Godzilla 1985 (1984)

DAIKAIJU DISCUSSION HOMEWORK

Beware the wrath of the giant idol, because next month’s focus for the Daikaiju Discussion is the 1966 Return of Daimajin by Gamera’s film studio, Daiei. We will be watching the ADV Films DVD, which (if you have seen this film before) is the one with the lake. So… not the original (obviously) and not the one with the kids in the snow. The Daimajin trilogy is one that I feel every Kaiju fan should see. They are set in feudal Japan and the first two films have little to no kiddie vibes. Overall, these are great and if you can pick them up, I urge you to do so. In fact, you can get it for cheap here at Buy.com or  Rightstuf.com (which is where I bought mine a couple of years ago).

Thanks again to everyone who took part in this month’s Daikaiju Discussion. Just remember that you need to submit your thoughts, questions and reviews for the next film before the last week of the month. Just email them to me and I’ll compile the submissions for the April discussion. Feel free to let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see in future episodes or if you have a music request!
