03.25.2015: Gamera vs. Jiger Daikaiju Discussion

Dave, Rachel, Kyle and Bryan take a Fantastic Voyage inside Gamera vs. Jiger!

Dave, Rachel, Kyle and Bryan take a Fantastic Voyage inside this month’s discussion film, Gamera vs. Jiger!

For this episode, I was joined by Bryan, Rachel and Dave and we are talking about the 1970 Daiei film, Gamera vs. Jiger. All in all, we kind of liked this film that almost seemed to have every aspect of the Showa Gamera series… except aliens. There were none to be found (outside the stock footage). Big thanks to everyone who sent in their homework – it was a lot of fun to read your reactions and reviews of this unique landmark on the kaiju landscape. One of the best parts about watching these old Gamera films is to really see the effort that was put into the productions, despite the decline in ticket sales and budgets.

We cover a handful of news topics towards the end of the show, so make sure you check out the links below if any of those are any interest to you. We also covered some events that are bringing kaiju related guests. And if that wasn’t enough, here are our musical selections for this episode…

1. Godzilla Forever! Akira Ifukube Showa Godzilla Medley of Glory (arrangement Hideo Saito) from Godzilla Singles (1985)
2. The Matango Woman by Sadao Bekko from Matango (1963)
3. Operation Rescue Gamera by Shunsuke Kikuchi from Gamera vs. Jiger (1970)
4. Zone Fighter March by Masato Shimon from Zone Fighter (1973)
5. Planet X by Atom Troy from Dance Godzilla (1996)

Death Kappa ...grossBlame Dave, people. It’s 100% his fault for choosing (at random?) our next film in the discussion list. We are grabbing something very recent for the next film. If you listen to the episode, you’ll hear the trepidation in my voice when we make the change during the show. Our next film on the chopping block is #^%&ing Death Kappa from 2010. Yes, the film that dashed my monster hopes against the jagged rocks of budgetary restraint. This film is available for cheap from Amazon if you really want to buy a physical copy. You can also stream it (not for free) from Amazon and a few other services. If you want to brave the waters and join us for our Death Kappa daikaiju discussion, make sure to have your thoughts, questions (not like I’ll be able to answer them) and reviews turned in before April 23rd.
